About my dance life...
Laura Migas has been teaching dance in public education for the past 10 years, first for the New York City Department of Education and then for CPS. She loves teaching dance and believes dance should be accessible to all students as it can unlock hidden talents, passions, and gives students new ways of thinking about the world.
She received her Masters of Arts in Dance Education with K-12 certification from New York University. While at New York University, she directed the Kaleidoscope Dancers II outreach company, which provides workshops in dance making to students in New York City schools. Before attending NYU, Laura taught at her hometown dance studio and at a ballroom studio in Seattle.
Laura graduated with honors from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she received her Bachelor of Science in Dance and Bachelor of Science in Social Welfare. At Madison, she assisted Rena Kornblum, a dance/movement therapist, with violence prevention workshops and small group therapy sessions held at two Madison elementary schools. Professionally, Laura has presented as part of a panel at the National Dance Education Organization's national conference and has presented a workshop based on dance/movement therapy as part of a week-long professional development held at Tulane University by the New Orleans Ballet Association.
As a dancer, Laura has studied a variety of dance styles such as ballet, modern, jazz, tap, ballroom, Latin, swing, and hip hop dance. As a choreographer, her work has been performed at New York University, the University of Chicago, Florida Community College – Jacksonville and the University of Wisconsin – Madison. She has also had the privilege of dancing in works choreographed by Diane McCarthy, Diane Duggan, Deborah Damast, Barbara Grubel, Gloria McLean and Debra Lottman among others.
